Amsterdam-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Misto Kay was first introduced on the scene with a feature on last years Super-Sonic Family Vol.2 compilation, plus a remix and feature on Mo Wrights debut EP things2proof. These releases got us excited for his first solo output, and 'What Makes You Dance' is a great showcase of his various sides. His love for UK broken beat is present on 3 tracks, next to those there's 1 uplifting house banger, and 2 more laid-back neo-soulful tracks. On multiple tunes Misto Kay's voice is heard for the first time as well, and hearing all these different elements come together as a full project makes us not just dance, but also really thrilled for what else he has in store for us in the near-future.

NAUSYQA is based in Amsterdam and consists of six musicians from Portugal, Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands. "Although life is hyper-individualised, you rarely go about it alone. This rings especially for RADIOHOP, the 4-man band drawing in everything that derives from Jazz. Aptly titled, ‘All We Do’ sees the band culminating each member’s journey through life as a performer and music head, into one entity. It is a collection of various musical feelings; drawn from all of the widely diverse musical environments they are surrounded by. Their early explorations in Hip-Hop laid the foundation RADIOHOP jetted from. With this debut EP, Mo Wrights delivers a jazz-focused and narrative-driven record navigating the inner dialogue of a creative struggle of inferiority, abstraction and commitment. The story finds him enlisting some friends along the way to advance from one act to the other.

With the title track - ‘things2proof’ - Mo tries to combine his myriad of influences in a 6-minute record that weaves together elements of jazz, broken beat, acid jazz, fusion, hip-hop and hints of rock. The coherence comes from his poignant narrative, which resembles a four-act structure, telling the story of alienation and his internal experience of inferiority, creative frustration, and his eventual recognition of a solution, concluding by finally permitting himself to simply ‘be’.

The b-side ‘proof of concept’ follows the title track and Mo embraces a more laid-back approach, sitting sonically closer to his beloved broken beat sound. Amsterdam-based pianist Misto Kay delivers a long soul-felt piano solo that carries the track into untold dimensions of groove.

As a co-founder of the Amsterdam-based music platform Steppin’ Into Tomorrow, whose ethos is anchored in the principle of collaboration and unification of the Dutch scene is a deeply felt sentiment throughout Mo’s EP. The connection between producers and musicians has always been very close but rarely are they on equal footing with each other on a project. Kill Your Darlings brings together this exact concept. Dutch producer Kid Sublime samples and flips records which are then interpreted by Amsterdam-based band of the moment RADIOHOP.

Operating within the same local scene, it didn’t take long for RADIOHOP and Kid Sublime to cross paths. Hot off the press that is the conservatory Amsterdam, the former set out the dominate the underground jazz scene in Amsterdam, playing and producing together, sitting in with other bands and frequent visitors of club nights and concerts. The latter has been cheffing up records on a consistent basis for over a decade. Meeting each other at those concerts, they were quick to turn towards the studio to align thoughts: too many good phrases, pockets and progressions.

‘Soil’ by Amsterdam-based producer and musician Jelee is heavily influenced by video game world-building. Like a beat alchemist, he carefully pours his love for beats into his lifelong passion for video game soundtracks. That far exceeds your typical 8-bits and bobs: Soil unfolds like a challenging adventure game, held together by a sonic palette of hip-hop-minded drum programming, jazz-inspired chords, and synthesized sounds.

The album features tight-knit homegrown collaborations with jazz multi-instrumentalist Guido Hoek, rising deejay Jerrau, producer lofi prototype (“one of Amsterdam’s best-kept secrets when it comes to beatmaking,” says Jelee), deejay, producer, and keyboardist Mo Wrights, and singer Erosi. With influences ranging from Brainfeeder’s roster to Zelda games, Jelee presents a multifaceted take on music.

Jelee’s music has been featured on compilations by Resilienza Records, Stamp The Wax, and Carista’s ‘Modern Intimacy Volume 1.’ Jelee is also known for his expressive live sets, such as the support act for Onra, Samiyam, and Salami Rose Joe Louis.

“I associate the album title Soil to a certain fertility; an opportunity to grow and realize new ideas,” explains Jelee. “But ‘soil’ also refers to the roots to which we owe everything. To me, this album reflects both: on the one hand, it’s a departure from my sample-based sound, while such techniques and influences are still evident. On the other hand, I embrace my roots in video game music. It's one of my first encounters with music outside of ‘pop music.’ Video game music shaped me, and I felt like it truly belonged to me. That’s what 'Soil' means to me.”

During the height of the pandemic, the lockdowns were really taking a toll on people in the music industry. We all had to get creative and look for ways in which musicians could play, record, and perform for a small audience in the heart of Amsterdam. Between October and December 2021, Steppin’ Into Tomorrow, Amarte Studio Concerts, and Flowriders Studio joined forces and came up with a solution for local artists in particular: intimate studio concerts. The Dutch-based artists invited their close friends and family as an audience to set foot on the ground they make their music from, creating a private and sonically soothing atmosphere.

The result of these recording sessions is what you’re holding in your hands right now. Looking back, it was a unique moment in time, historically, but creatively as well. The artists all managed to capture serenity in the midst of disorder existing beyond the confines of the studio. Every recording attains a piece of tranquility in its own respective way, but all converge on the fact the music arrives to us from the vast Dutch musical landscape.

We’re extremely thankful for the opportunity to create these moments where live music and honest expressions intertwine. In conversation with the artists, we selected one track of each performance for this compilation, to present you with a glimpse into the heterogeneous ways in which Dutch artists interpret and shape the music from Dutch soil.

Loyal to the soil, here, is not meant as some form of national pride, but instead sees musicians being situated in a cultural environment that they deem either useful or contestable, which is presented through their music. It sees musicians as interpreters of what happens around us and translates this into their own creative makings.

We thank each artist not only for the blessing of putting this intimate project together but trusting us with our aim to unite the local music scene. New EPs, collaborations, and tracks followed from these studio sessions and we hope that the local scene keeps on thriving.

“Antares Flare is a rising jazz sextet based in Rotterdam that takes inspiration from South American magic realism, West-African traditional rhythms, and psychedelic atmospheric electronic sounds. The group consists of members from various places in the world, such as Italy, Slovenia, Malta, and the Netherlands, which shows in their worldly repertoire. These first two singles are a wonderful introduction and set the tone for their self-titled debut album, which will drop after the summer and is produced by Anton de Bruin (Dragonfruit/Peter Somuah).”

“Kimchi was born out of Noa Silver’s desire to create a beat tape that made him feel like he did when he first listened to the timeless creations of producers such as RJD2, Damu the Fudgemunk, and DJ Shadow. Noa’s intention was to capture that same child-like excitement and stank-face enthusiasm from his own work. Much of the music was complete - essentially ready for release. But in late 2019, for reasons unbeknownst to us mere mortals, Noa sent the tape to Equivocal. On the very same day, Equivocal sent 4 different voice notes back to Noa with rough cuts of verses that have already been written for other projects, as well as obnoxiously loud exclamations of dopeness (e.g. “Wooooooshiiiitttt”). The cohesiveness and the ‘rightness’, however, of how the lyrics felt working in harmonization with the instrumentation left the two creatives with a budding brain baby: “We Should Make This An EP!” Low and behold, 3 years later, and with contributions from Paul van Laar on Bass, Tom Veltman on Guitar, Louwrens van der Zwaag on Trumpet, Keith Keyes and Kit Davies on Saxophone, Equivocal and Noa Silver present to you: Kimchi - a double-sided EP of raw emceeing abilities and beat proficiencies alike.”

"NE-BUR consists of two musicians/producers D-Felic and Wiboud Burkens from The Hague who have been dropping plenty of soulful output for the past 20 years. Together they joined forces to experiment with analog instruments, modern technology, and experimental quirky sounds.

For the '2.24' EP they took inspiration from the mystic nature of Japan and the vibrant anime scene. This came together in 5 tracks that fit into the jazz realm of contemporary lofi with warm Fender Rhodes and classic synths, all with the exact length of 2 minutes and 24 seconds."

“Freek Mulder, a.k.a. kotokid, is spreading his wings and taking to the skies with his debut release. The first EP of the producer and bass player is symbolically titled ‘Fledge’, as in the young birds’ period just before embarking on their first flight, while developing feathers large enough in order to take off. The listening experience reflects the feeling, is packed with complex compositions, yet full of light sonically and spiritually.

The intricate title is complemented right off the bat with the first track, ‘Unfreeze’, which captures the emotions of opening up again after hiding away from yourself. Recorded in the Flowriders studio with Freek on bass, along with a bunch of analog synths and drum computers, together with Jonathan Szegedi on drums, and Maarten Cima on guitar. Restoring optimism with ‘Revlead’ and ‘Glitchdragon’, inspired by late ‘70s Weather Report feels like a sonic embrace. 2 tracks on the EP feature the soulful vocalist Bahghi Yemane, on the genuinely empowering, emotion-filled ‘Neghisti’ and a thoughtful tribute to the city of arched bridges, ‘New Amsterdam’. Overall, the elements of ‘80s jazz-fusion, modern hip-hop, and indie R&B shape this musical piece into a unique experience of its own kind, cleverly blending ponderous melodies and harmonies with solid grooves and sound design, while the bangin’ bassline ties everything together in the most sophisticated and delightful way. Kotokid renders undiscovered environments, with improvisation and composition existing as equals in his music.

The animation on the cover is a design by Portuguese tattoo artist Ricardo Almeida, which depicts a may bug, or a doodlebug, in Dutch often called ‘mulder’. Just like Freek’s last name and a family symbol that he carries around with him on a ring. Perhaps it’s no coincidence may bugs are attracted to light.”

"Honing your skills is underappreciated in times of instant gratification and the continuous stream of music. Rotterdam-based producer Kofi The Unknown subverts this idea and took time for spiritual introspection, studying rhythms and sound production. Where being a late bloomer normally is seen as a sobriquet, the producer, composer and beatmaker wears it as a badge of honour and solidifies it as an honorary title by pinning it to his debut EP on Wicked Wax: The Late Bloomer. Wearing his heart on his sleeve, Kofi The Unknown shares his journey that led to The Late Bloomer, an emotional journey through sophisticated dance music, straight from the heart, aimed at the soul and feet.

Highly influential to Kofi’s sound and this EP is London’s Broken Beat scene. Syncopated drums, soulful chords, and heavy bass lines work in tandem to emphasize the danceability the genre is known for. This is further solidified by the track Kofi released leading up to this release: One for Motet, an ode to the Broken Beat MC, and Jazz Re:freshed host Jason Hicks. The Late Bloomer further develops Kofi’s ode, but provides his Rotterdam flavour and brings his Hip Hop and Funk lineage into the mix.

Embrace Mistakes sets the stage for what’s to come in various ways. It is a textbook case of how dance music can tell a story and be introspective. Kofi’s honesty shines bright on the entire EP and strikes from the first kick drum on. It also shouldn’t be hard to recognise and feel the emotion the producer shares on the title track The Late Bloomer. The emotionally-laced chords and crushing drums are reminiscent of late nights at a warehouse or emotional sequences from a dystopian movie.

Staying true to his ethos ’exploring the university that music holds’, Kofi finds this beyond music production as The Late Bloomer provides an audible experience through creative mixing. Stuttering analog synths, enveloping leads, multiple percussion rhythms, and off-beat snare rolls hit from all directions of the stereo spectrum, further underlining the sophistication of his merit. While the EP follows the Broken Beat accents on dance, it is an equally mindful listening experience.

Kofi The Unknown is a Rotterdam native producer with a knack for rhythms. His keen ear is informed by mentor and Dutch enigma Trian Kayhatu. While Kofi has taken the time to perfect his skills under the guidance of Trian, the two are simultaneously working on the exciting follow-up project to this debut EP. Without looking too far ahead, enjoy The Late Bloomer. It’s not only a crown jewel Kofi proudly wears, it is also establishing him as a future household name in the sophisticated dance scene.’

"While concerts, club nights, and live festivals are somewhere in a future just beyond our grasp, Shamis and Rebiere encapsulated that longing in the upcoming Wicked Wax & INI Movement joint EP Rock It For Ya/Shake It Off. Themed around the concept of freedom through dancing, the EP is a true musical stress reliever that makes it hard to sit still.

Shamis & Rebiere invite you to let go of daily stresses with the four-on-the-floor groover Rock It For Ya. The beats and soulful instrumentations are enriched with the vocals by Shamis, who also adds to the theme of the track in lyrically. ‘Let me rock it ’til the lights go out and the sun will rise again.’ reminds us of a time we possibly all long for. Reminded of something Kaytranada-esque drum programming, the harmonies and chords really keep you engaged with the track.

Shake It Off takes on a modern soul approach to the theme of the EP. With a slower pace than the A-side, it’s equally as infectious to make you move. The duos dynamic is most clear in the way certain synth licks and horn melodies blend together with Shamis’ soothing vocals. Lush chords and laid back drums provide a care-free feeling, perfectly underlining the concept of the EP.

The EP comes with a remix of each track and both are very much in line with theme. Fouk add a house touch to Rock It For Ya with a heavy bass line, capturing (or reminiscing) a club night feeling. Californian funkster B.Bravo adds his signature modern funk sound to Shake It Off, making it even more irresistible to maintain your body still. It’s evident that both understood how to translate the theme of the EP to their remixes."

With its aim to present the world the forward-striving sound of the Netherlands, record label Wicked Wax proudly presents 'Body No. 1' by local band Floatmonki as its eleventh vinyl release. An autobiographical album in a lyrical sense and a musical blend between jazz-fusion, prog rock and futuristic elements of soul.

As a brainchild of vocalist and composer Donna van Dijck, Floatmonki’s music tells intimate stories of rebirth, exploration and ardour, all rooted in a jazz-fusion framework. Body No 1. is no exception. Leading vocals serenade lush instrumentals. With introspective and heartfelt lyrics, the band invites you on an autobiographical journey through personal experiences of hardship, comfort and resolve. The rich sounding harmonies provided by rhythmic guitar riffs, piano melodies and captivating synths soundscapes make Body No. 1 elevate the listening experience to a degree where emotions almost become tangible.

Body No. 1 also draws parallels between nature and the artificial, as the electronic sounds soothing synths and pulsating bass lines are juxtaposed with emotions all humans experience in one point or another during their lifetime. The albums flows as flawless as water through a babbling brook, enriching the tangible emotions and the narrative of the story.

Amsterdam-based label Wicked Wax continues to plug the sound of its city to a broader audience. Sometimes that sound lies in the past. For its upcoming 13th release, the label went and linked up with one of Amsterdam’s unsung heroes, who’s been a household name behind the (international) music scene. Keyboardist, composer and owner of the legendary Flowriders studio Vincent Helbers released his debut album ‘Hear To See’ as Seravince in 2013. A blend of broken beat, future soul and multiple adjective-jazz styles, compiled in a masterfully mixed 45-minute album. Now, 7 years later, the album is released on vinyl for the first time.

Seravince’s Hear To See sees Vincent cultivating his extensive experience inside the studio. The album is deeply rooted in broken beat drum grooves, provided by longtime collaborator and UK drummer extraordinaire Richard Spaven. These are accompanied by the jazz-inspired harmonies and solos from Seravince himself. All musical elements are one takes, recorded on analogue tape. “I want the sound to maintain the rawness and organic vibe,” Seravince explains. The sensual vocals on the album are courtesy of RH Factor singer Renee Neufville (US) and Sharlene Hector (UK), who’s worked together with Reel People and Basement Jaxx.

Organic live drums and percussion are laced with jazz harmonies and an alternation between synths and bass lines. Topped off with a smooth horn section, the album can be seen as a milestone in the maturing of the broken beat genre. It set the tone for the genre from 2013 onwards. The driving inspiration for the sound of this album was D'Angelo's modern soul masterpiece Voodoo. Seravince explains that it was one of the first albums to revert to the seventies' way of recording whole takes to tape.

“The recording of Hear to See mirrors that of D’Angelo’s Voodoo: I used the same SSL mixing desk, tape machines and mics. Although my music is more layered, I have tried to give the bass and drums that same authentic vibe.” – Seravince

The album is crafted in such a sophisticated manner, only someone who’s as experienced as Vincent can bring forward. His keen ear behind the mixing desk, composing and recording with the likes of Wu Tang Clan, Jordan Rakei, Airto Moreira, Jose James, Cinematic Orchestra, Ronald Snijders and more, and his extensive experience behind keyboards, synths and pianos; all these factors come together on this album, which is reflected in its sophistication.

Kicking off the new year with international appeal, Amsterdam-based Wicked Wax enlist Jonny Tobin for their tenth release. The Canadian keyboardist and songwriter has a knack for crafting his skill to cater to a wide variety of different styles, which are more than apparent on the upcoming ‘Weekends’ EP. Tobin tells a soulful story, weaving together modern-funk and neo-soul with jazzy synth leads, layered chord progressions and groove-oriented beats.

Since its release, the single ‘Kameleon’ has been doing well in the digital airwaves. In collaboration with talkbox virtuoso Swatkins from Portland and Melbourne based vocalist Meiwa, Kameleon is a smooth slow jam with a groovy synth bass. Accompanied by Tobin’s keen chord progression and Swatkins’ talkbox solo, the track feels like a elaboration of the Westcoast funk sound. Tobin bends the genre to his taste, adding his extensive knowledge of jazz.

Synth heavy solos, basslines and larger-than-life chords characterize the entire project. With four- on-the-floor cuts like ‘Praise’ and ‘Cosmic Ocean’ and the gospel-inspired b-side (referencing the Holy day of the weekend), the record encapsulates the mind of the Canadian producer and shows his wide inspirations. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the EP can easily be described as “a lush soundtrack to a sun-drenched weekend.

Jonny Tobin is part of an up and coming wave of new artists within the modern funk and soul spectrum. The ‘Weekends’ EP sees him collaborating with artist from the same pool he’s in, such as Makadi, Guerschon Auguste, Janelle Reid and more. Together the collaborators are pushing their sound forward. something Wicked Wax is also keen on.

Additionally, Tobin got some help from AstroLogical, one half of Potatohead People. He guided Jonny and helped co-produce the EP, with great success as you’ll surely hear.

After the success of their 1st compilation “Feeding U New Knocks Vol.1”, the More Bounce Collective return with another curated list of songs by various flag bearers from the thriving modern-funk movement. Their aim is to shed more light on the genre and tie the international scene closer together. Sporting songs from Sivey, Daniel Crawford, Jonny Tobin, Temu and Erik Rico, this second compilation even further settles in the MORE BOUNCE collective as leaders of modern-funk. While maintaining an international roster, they’re also keen on finding hidden gems and new talent, like the Dutch-stationed JAEL, Azteka and Rebiere.

From there they've grown into a platform for today's Funk-scene where they invited people like MXXWLL, Onra, Pomrad, Trian Kayhatu, Butufunk, Sven Atterton, Mofak, Devin Morrison and others to perform live-shows at their nights.

With ‘In Between Shifts’, singer/producer LYMA presents his taste for rhythms and melodies that resonate by its originality and broad sound palette.

During his years of solitude, LYMA has been honing his skills and recording his sun-tinged ideas. Somewhere between this phase, he hooked up with the local INI Movement. With great difficulty they convinced him to tread forward from anonymity. LYMA’s ideas were fleshed out and the outcome of these creative escapades is the ‘In Between Shifts’ EP. Ranging between soul, forward-thinking hip hop and genre bending dance, the collaboration between LYMA and INI Movement created a new branch that is only starting to sprout its leafs.

The song ‘Bigger' is already making waves in the digital realm. With 'It’s Ti’ LYMA dives deeper into his soul side. While tracks such as ‘Hibernate', ‘Fading' and ‘Bagdadway' perfectly illustrate various styles LYMA draws inspiration from. His voice blends with the illustrious instrumentations, making 'In Between Shifts’ a certified soulful release on vinyl.

As Amsterdam’s most versatile jazz flutist, Han weaves dance, african, soul, jazz, brazillian and tribal music together. He's all about crossing over and does so this time with the ‘Unity In Diversity EP’. An EP inspired by both Litz’ jazz background and his humble adoration for organic sounds from Brazil and Africa.

The formation emulates vintage samba textures and harmonies on the a-side with Han’s flute flowing throughout the record as a slight breeze.
On the flip you’ll find Litz and his group infusing African percussion rhythms and Yoruba chants with the broken-beat aesthetic. With the strong previously unreleased Osunlade remix as an icing on the cake, the EP shows Han Litz’ diversity and the unifying power of music.

Revolution is the final chapter in a musical trilogy that started in 2012 with the release of Daniel Crawford's debut album 'Red Pill' followed by the critically acclaimed 'The Awakening' in 2014. This jazz influenced soul album looks to take the listener on a journey that from ranges from Afrobeat, Fusion, R&B and Hip Hop. 

This album features the likes of DJ Jazzy Jeff, Dayne Jordan, Maimouna Youssef, Kaidi Tatham, Osunlade and Jimetta Rose. The album also features Damon, Demont and Chris Crawford (Daniel's two brothers and father) on a very special song that pays tribute to their beloved grandfather/stepfather Willie Moore and cousin/nephew Terrell "T-Rex" Bickhem who they lost back to back last year. 

These artists tackle subjects ranging from police brutality, love, despair and hope in their own unique way. 

No more Red Pills, no more Awakenings, all that is left is Revolution!

Wicked Jazz Connection is a project of the Amsterdam-based platform Wicked Jazz Sounds. The project’s name is really about just that: connections.
Bridging from one side to the other, this EP is a travel thru many musical styles, countries and influences, with The Pharcyde’s own Bootie Brown along for the ride (the hiphop inflected “Patience”), as well as Philly poetress Ursula Rucker (on the afrobeat-influenced “Hurricane”)

Other lead vocals are by Berenice van Leer and Norman Kapoyos, the latter also produced the EP along with Baraka G. & Leroy Rey.

Fresh off their Bossa Nova - infused J Dilla/Maurice White tribute on 7-inch vinyl, Les Cooles De Ville returns with their first EP on wax and digital formats. Collecting their songs from 2015 and 2016, the Amsterdam based outfit showcases their travel and explorations into their own unique euro-centric sound.

Based on the principles of the Native Tongues and the Soulquarians they craft soulful, laidback and jazzy hip-hop evoking feelings of summer sunsets, small gatherings of people, Soul-food and inner- city living. It’s easy to hear the influences of early De la Soul and Common on some of their songs, while others would fit in the LA beat scene of Flying Lotus or in the more introspective landscape of Nujabes.

“Smile” has been recently released as single, gettin’ airplay in Germany as well as France and added by several DJ’s globally to their playlist.

Overall a pleasant listening experience for the moments you need a more subtle but still energetic soundtrack to your life.

The Proov is a Dutch rap group that started in 1996, considered one of the premier groups in the first wave of hip hop from The Netherlands.

Now we are releasing their first demo EP 'Speaker Room' from 1997 in the digital world for the first time. Sold back then in a run of 100 cassettes, it got them a record deal which resulted in an EP and a full-length album (both titled "Traditions", after the song featured on this EP, but not containing the song itself) and success in the form of two years touring, lots of press/media coverage and creating the track to the video for the Nike campaign relating to UEFA Euro 2000.

In the meantime the 4-track master disappeared and was lost for 18+ years, but was found when original member Leroy Rey was moving his studio. The songs are newly mixed & mastered by Leroy himself, but with the demo charm kept intact, to still approach that original vintage feel the cassette had.

Firmly rooted in Native Tongues aesthetics, this EP shows the band in already prime form, creatively connecting the old school with the new, taking cues from acts like Organized Konfusion ("Loose Cannon") and Common ("Mind Is Wealth") in the process, while never lose sight of their own unique outlook on the rap game ca. 1997.

"Speaker Room" is a little treasure, recommended to fans of that true school mid-to-late 90's hip hop sound.
